Northside Cultural District Info < 1 of 15 >

The Northside Cultural District in Chicago consists of a 31,000 square foot new construction cultural center housing the Ed Paschke Art Center, a museum and education center celebrating the work of the renowned Chicago Artist, The Chicago Art Center, a temporary art exhibition gallery and the National Veterans Art Museum. The new construction three-story museum building of attenuated grey masonry is punctuated with large expanses of colored glass and imagery referencing the work of Ed Paschke. The outboard lite of dichroic glass changes color depending on viewing angle—a nod to the psychedelic colors in Paschke’s work—which, together with figural imagery on the inboard lite of glass suggests a painting decomposed. The building’s solid brick façade becomes screen-like to allow light into the building in a selective manner; a bridge on the second level connects to the National Veterans Art Museum and a gallery for its signature artwork Above and Beyond, featuring replica dog tags of soldiers lost in the Vietnam War. A third level sculpture terrace has walls of screened brick to allow views of the adjacent public park to root the building in place.
