The design approach to renovating the Newberry proposes understanding the building as a palimpsest wherein the history of building is yet visible through the renovation. In this conceptual framing, the previous renovations of the building read like earlier writings on a vellum palimpsest that have been partially erased, laying bare its rich history, and onto which the future course of the institution is written.
