This project, an indoor/outdoor recreation venue in an abandoned quarry near Chicago, rethinks the life-work balance and how people will choose to spend their time in the future. Located adjacent to the I & M Canal waterway which originally connected the Chicago and Des Plaines rivers, the multi-building “base camp” includes indoor climbing, co-working, dining and event spaces which challenge the way people think about recreation, fitness, stewardship, sustainability and work. The architecture is elemental and direct, employing rusted steel and board-formed concrete to create a unique sense of place and reflect the character of the former industrial site.
