Aquaponics Educational Center Info < 2/6 >

Chicago Illinois This educational facility is intended to educate students in the practice of aquaponics, a process which utilizes a symbiotic relationship between fish, water, and plants to sustainably grow food. The structure consists of a series of glass roof modules configured to collect rain water for plant irrigation and generate power for the facility via photovoltaic cells integrated within the glass roof surface. The classroom at the entry supports educational programs and serves as an audio/visual presentation area for visiting educational groups, to introduce them to the concept of aquaponics. A walkway connecting the classroom with the processing area provides an overview of the aquaponics area, and views to the existing youth garden beyond. A processing center is located to the rear of the facility for students to actively participate in the growing and harvesting of their own crops to be sold to their local community.
